The Maurten Bicarb System is a sodium bicarbonate supplement designed for use before high-intensity exercise. Sodium bicarbonate is a well-studied alkalising agent that works by raising blood pH, which helps buffer the build-up of hydrogen ions during intense effort. That buffering effect is associated with a delay in the onset of muscular fatigue — particularly relevant in events or training sessions where you are working at or near threshold for sustained periods.
The product is aimed at competitive and serious recreational athletes: track and road cyclists, middle- and long-distance runners, rowers, and anyone whose performance is limited by the accumulation of metabolic acid during repeated hard efforts. It is most relevant in training blocks where intensity is high and recovery between sessions is short.
Sodium bicarbonate supplementation is one of the more consistently supported ergogenic strategies in sports science. The challenge with it has historically been gastrointestinal discomfort — a well-known side effect when taken in standard bolus doses. Maurten's Bicarb System addresses this with a specifically developed delivery format designed to reduce that GI burden, which is the key differentiator from simply purchasing sodium bicarbonate in bulk.
This is not an everyday supplement. It is a targeted, session-specific tool for athletes who have already optimised the basics and want a protocol-driven edge on race day or in key training sessions.
Sodium Bicarbonate

Follow the protocol on the packaging — timing and preparation before exercise is specific to this system and matters for both efficacy and tolerability. Do not substitute a generic sodium bicarbonate dose; the format here is designed to manage gastrointestinal side effects.
Standard sodium bicarbonate taken as a bolus is well known for causing nausea, bloating, and gastrointestinal distress in many athletes. Maurten's Bicarb System uses a specific delivery format designed to reduce that GI burden — which is the primary reason to choose this over a generic source.
Athletes competing or training at high intensities where metabolic acid accumulation limits performance — middle-distance runners, cyclists, rowers, and team sport athletes during repeated sprint efforts. It is less relevant for low-intensity or purely aerobic training.
The timing is protocol-specific. Follow the instructions on the packaging exactly — the system is designed around a particular preparation window, and deviating from it may affect both efficacy and tolerability.
Sodium bicarbonate may not be appropriate for individuals with kidney conditions, those on a sodium-restricted diet, or people taking certain medications. If you have any of these concerns, check with a clinician before use.
Yes — this is standard practice with any new supplement protocol. Trialling the system in a hard training session first lets you assess your individual tolerability before relying on it in competition.

Been using this for the past few weeks ahead of my track season. I was sceptical about sodium bicarb in general — had a bad experience years ago with the DIY approach and serious stomach cramps. No issues here. Took it as directed before a tough interval session and genuinely felt like I could sustain the effort for longer before my legs started screaming. Not a miracle, but a real, perceptible difference.

Used this before my 1500m races this season. The format makes it so much easier to stomach than loose bicarb, which I'd tried before and absolutely could not handle. Felt composed going into the final 300 and recovered quicker between heats at a recent open meet. Will keep it in the toolkit.

It works — I've noticed I can push harder in 20-minute threshold efforts without that early acidic fade. My only gripe is the cost. At £59.95 for what amounts to a fairly modest number of uses, it's hard to justify using it in every key session. I save it for races and the odd particularly important training block. If it were £10–15 cheaper I'd use it far more freely.

I'm a 400/800m runner and have always been curious about sodium bicarbonate. Every time I tried it the old way I'd spend the warm-up feeling like my insides were revolting. This is genuinely different. Took it before a race simulation session, had zero GI issues, and felt strong through the back half. Really impressed.

Does exactly what it says. Used it before a hard 40k TT effort and held my power better through the final 10k than usual. No stomach drama. Would buy again.

I race cat 2 on the road and I'm pretty evidence-driven about what I put in my body. Sodium bicarb has solid research behind it, the problem has always been tolerability. This format solves that problem. Took it before a criterium, felt sharp late in the race when I usually start to fade. Sample size of one, obviously, but I'll keep using it.
