About This Product.

Maurten Drink Mix 160 is a carbohydrate-based sports drink mix designed to fuel endurance exercise. It uses hydrogel technology — a concept built around alginate and pectin forming a gel-like matrix in the stomach — to deliver carbohydrates smoothly and with minimal gastrointestinal disruption. That matters because gut discomfort is one of the most common reasons endurance athletes lose pace mid-effort.

The mix is intended for use during training or competition, particularly sessions where sustained carbohydrate availability is the priority. It suits runners, cyclists, triathletes, and anyone doing continuous moderate-to-high intensity work. Unlike many sports drinks that lean on artificial flavours or heavy sweeteners, Maurten's approach is notably neutral in taste, which makes it easier to consume repeatedly across a long session without palate fatigue.

The "160" in the name refers to the carbohydrate content of the prepared drink, giving you a clear sense of the energy load you are working with. This transparency is useful for athletes who track fuelling with the same precision they bring to training load.

Maurten has built a strong reputation in elite distance running and cycling — the brand has appeared at the sharp end of major marathon and road cycling events. That pedigree reflects formulation choices that prioritise function and tolerability over marketing novelty. For athletes who have struggled with conventional sports drinks, it is often the first option our practitioners suggest trialling.

Drink Mix 160

How to Take It

i.

Mix the contents of one serving with water as directed on the packaging. Consume during exercise — it is designed for use mid-session rather than as a pre-workout drink. Follow the preparation instructions carefully, as the hydrogel forms correctly only when mixed at the specified concentration.

Frequently Asked.

What does the '160' in the name refer to?

It refers to the carbohydrate content of the prepared drink. Knowing this figure allows athletes to plan their fuelling strategy with precision, particularly across longer events or training blocks.

How does hydrogel technology differ from a standard sports drink?

Standard sports drinks deliver carbohydrates and electrolytes in a liquid solution. Maurten's approach uses alginate and pectin to form a gel-like consistency in the stomach, which is thought to support smoother carbohydrate absorption and reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal discomfort during effort.

When during exercise should I take this?

Drink Mix 160 is formulated for consumption during exercise, not before. Check the packaging for specific timing and serving guidance relative to your session length and intensity.

Is this suitable if I have a sensitive stomach during training?

The hydrogel formulation is specifically designed with gut comfort in mind, and it is often recommended for athletes who have found conventional sports drinks cause bloating or cramping. That said, individual responses vary — trialling it in training before a race is always sensible.

Does it contain any flavouring or sweeteners?

Maurten Drink Mix is known for its minimal, neutral flavour profile. Check the packaging for a full ingredient and allergen breakdown specific to this product.

Finally a drink I can stomach mid-run

I've tried pretty much every sports drink going over the years and most of them have me pulling faces after the third bottle. This one I can just keep drinking without thinking about it. Used it through a 22-mile training run last weekend — no cramps, no nausea, nothing. Just kept moving. Brilliant.

Gut-friendly and then some

Switched to this before my spring half marathon block after a friend who does Ironmans wouldn't stop going on about it. She was right. I used to get that sloshy, uncomfortable feeling after about 45 mins of running with a drink. Haven't had it once since switching. Neutral taste means I actually look forward to grabbing the bottle.

Solid product, steep price

It works — no question. My long rides feel genuinely better fuelled and I've had zero stomach issues which used to plague me. But at £27 for one box it does sting a bit, especially when you're going through several servings a week in peak training. Would be a 5-star if the cost were a little more reasonable.

Does exactly what it says. Subtle taste, sat perfectly in my stomach during a long triathlon brick session. Wouldn't go back to my old drink mix.

Proper endurance fuel

Started using this about six weeks out from a marathon and it's become a non-negotiable part of my long run kit. The almost-tasteless thing is the real selling point for me — by mile 18 I genuinely can't face anything sweet, and this just goes down like water. Noticed I'm hitting the end of my long runs in better shape energy-wise than I was before.

My stomach thanks me every ride

Used to dread the second half of long cycling sportives because I'd always end up with some kind of gut discomfort. Tried this on a recommendation from my coach and it's been a revelation. Three hours in and still going strong with no issues. The lack of artificial taste is a huge bonus.
