About This Product.

Thorne Vitamin D 5,000 is a single-ingredient supplement delivering vitamin D3 — the same form your skin synthesises from sunlight — at 5,000 IU per capsule. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the preferred supplemental form because it raises and sustains serum 25(OH)D levels more effectively than D2. At this dose, it is suited to people who have confirmed low or deficient vitamin D status, typically identified through a 25(OH)D blood test, rather than those looking to maintain levels that are already adequate.

Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption in the gut and plays a role in bone mineralisation. It is also studied for its role in immune regulation, including the modulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses. People who are likely to benefit include those in northern latitudes with limited sun exposure, individuals with darker skin tones, older adults, and those who are housebound or office-bound year-round.

At this potency, it is sensible to confirm your baseline with a blood test before starting, and to retest after two to three months to avoid over-supplementation — vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates in tissue. Thorne is a brand with a strong reputation for manufacturing rigour and clean formulations, making it a straightforward choice when potency and purity both matter.

How to Take It

i.

Take one capsule daily, preferably with a meal containing fat, as vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and absorbs better alongside dietary fat. Follow the guidance of your clinician, particularly if you are taking a higher-potency supplement for the first time.

Frequently Asked.

How do I know if I need 5,000 IU rather than a lower dose?

A 25(OH)D blood test is the right starting point. A dose this size is typically recommended for people with confirmed deficiency or insufficiency, not as a general daily top-up. We offer vitamin D testing at The Wellness Boutique if you have not yet checked your levels.

Is it safe to take vitamin D at this dose long term?

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble it accumulates over time, so long-term use at 5,000 IU is generally monitored with periodic blood tests rather than taken open-endedly. Speak to your clinician and aim to retest serum levels after two to three months of consistent use.

Can I take this alongside a multivitamin that already contains vitamin D?

Check the vitamin D content of your multivitamin first. Combining products can push your total daily intake higher than intended, and cumulative over-supplementation is the main risk with fat-soluble vitamins. Add up all sources before stacking.

Why D3 rather than D2?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the form produced naturally in the skin and is generally regarded as more effective at raising and maintaining serum 25(OH)D levels compared to D2 (ergocalciferol), which is why it is the preferred form in most clinical and supplemental contexts.

Who should be cautious about taking this supplement?

People with conditions that affect calcium metabolism — including sarcoidosis, primary hyperparathyroidism, or certain kidney conditions — should consult a doctor before taking higher-dose vitamin D. It may also interact with certain medications, including thiazide diuretics.

Part of my morning routine now

Take one with breakfast every day, dead simple. Had my levels checked in autumn and they were lower than I'd like, so my GP suggested a higher-dose D3. Been on this about three months now and retested — levels are much improved. Capsule is small, easy to swallow, no aftertaste.

Good supplement, bottle could be bigger

The capsules themselves are fine — small, clean formula, no issues at all. My only gripe is the bottle only contains 60 capsules, so at one a day you're reordering every two months, which feels like unnecessary hassle. Would prefer a 90 or 120 count option.

First impressions: solid

Got my bloods back showing I was quite low, GP suggested supplementing and a friend pointed me toward this. Only been taking it a few weeks but it arrived quickly, capsules are tiny and easy to swallow — no aftertaste at all. Retesting in a couple of months so I'll know more then, but nothing to complain about so far.

Exactly what I needed post blood test

Tested deficient last winter — not surprising given I work in an open-plan office and rarely see daylight from October to March. Switched to this from a cheaper supermarket brand and noticed my follow-up bloods were significantly better. Good quality capsule, no fillers I couldn't identify.

Does what it says. Levels were low, now they're not.

Reliable D3 for Irish winters

Living in Dublin and working from home doesn't exactly help with sun exposure. My GP flagged low vitamin D on a routine blood panel and suggested 5,000 IU for a few months to correct it. This was the cleanest formulation I could find at this dose — minimal ingredients, reputable brand. Will retest next month.
