Fever in children

A doctor kneeling to talk with a young girl in a family living room.

A temperature of 38C or more is a fever. Most fevers in children get better within three days1.

What to do now

Keep them drinking and let them rest. Children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen can help if they are uncomfortable1.

Do not give both together unless a doctor advises it, and do not sponge them with cold water1.

When to call 111 or a GP

Under 3 months with 38C or more, 3 to 6 months with 39C or more, a fever for 5 days, or getting worse1.

When to call 999

A rash that does not fade under a glass, struggling to breathe, very hard to wake, or a first seizure1. NICE uses similar signs2.
