How an ADHD assessment at The Wellness works

A consultant psychiatrist spends 90 minutes with you, by video for £1,250 or in person on Harley Street for £1,500, and most people are seen within the week. The written report follows within 5 working days and is written so your GP can share care. If you are diagnosed, the same team handles titration, with the heart rate and blood pressure checks NICE asks for, and the shared care letter.

What you get at The Wellness

  • 90 minutes with a consultant psychiatrist, £1,250 by video or £1,500 in person on Harley Street.
  • Most people are seen within the week.
  • A written report within 5 working days, written so your GP can share care.
  • Titration and the checks NICE asks for, with the same team, if you are diagnosed.

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness every ADHD assessment is carried out by a consultant psychiatrist, over 90 minutes, with a written report.

NICE says a diagnosis of ADHD should only be made by a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional with training and expertise in diagnosing ADHD, after a full clinical and psychosocial assessment. NICE guideline NG87, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diagnosis and management, recommendation 1.3.1

NICE also says a diagnosis should not be made on rating scales or observation alone, which is why the assessment includes a full developmental and psychiatric history. NICE guideline NG87, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diagnosis and management, recommendation 1.3.1

Questions to ask before any ADHD assessment

  • Is the assessment done by a consultant psychiatrist?
  • How long is it, and is it in person or online?
  • When will I have the written report, and will my GP accept it?
  • Who handles medication and titration if I am diagnosed, and what does it cost?

How to read an ADHD assessment price

Check who assesses you, because NICE says a specialist psychiatrist or another appropriately qualified clinician should make the diagnosis.

Ask what happens after. Titration and follow ups are usually charged separately, at every provider on this page.

Count the wait as part of the price. A lower fee with a longer wait may suit you, or it may not.

What the evidence says

NICE says a diagnosis needs symptoms that meet the DSM or ICD criteria and cause at least moderate impairment in two or more settings, such as work, home and relationships. NICE guideline NG87, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, diagnosis and management, 2018, updated 2019

An international consensus of ADHD researchers set out 208 evidence based conclusions, including that ADHD persists into adulthood for many people. Faraone and colleagues, The World Federation of ADHD International Consensus Statement, 208 evidence-based conclusions about the disorder, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, 2021

Warning signs at any provider

  • The assessment is a questionnaire alone, with no interview with a clinician.
  • Nobody can say who will assess you or what their training is.
  • Medication is offered before the assessment is complete.
  • There is no plan for heart rate and blood pressure checks before medicine starts.
