Best Hair Loss Treatment For Men In London. What Works At Each Stage

There is no single best treatment, because the right one depends on how far your loss has progressed. Early recession responds well to medication and PRP, because the follicles are shrinking rather than gone. Advanced loss needs surgery, because no injection revives a closed follicle. Most men waste years by applying an early-stage treatment to a late-stage problem, or by delaying while the window closes.

Key points

  • Norwood 2 to 4 is the treatment window, where follicles are miniaturising and still respond to medication and PRP.

  • Norwood 6 to 7 generally needs a hair transplant in the areas of complete loss, with medical treatment to protect what remains.

  • The most common error is not choosing the wrong product, it is waiting, because every stage you advance reduces what treatment can achieve.

  • Untreated contributors such as low ferritin and thyroid dysfunction blunt every treatment until corrected, which is why testing comes first.

The four treatments that actually work

Finasteride

Lowers DHT, the hormone that shrinks genetically sensitive follicles. It has the strongest evidence for halting progression in male pattern hair loss and is the backbone of most plans. A minority of men report sexual or mood side effects, and men on testosterone therapy frequently decline it because lowering DHT is the opposite of what they are paying for. Topical finasteride reduces systemic exposure and is a reasonable middle route.

Minoxidil

Extends the growth phase and improves blood supply to the follicle. Available topically or as low-dose oral treatment under medical supervision. It is cheap, effective and well established, but it works only while you use it, and stopping leads to loss of the gained hair over the following months.

PRP

Uses growth factors concentrated from your own blood to stimulate miniaturising follicles, with no hormonal action at all. It is supported by a 2025 meta-analysis in Dermatology and Therapy pooling 43 randomised controlled trials and 1,877 participants, which found PRP increases hair density. Pooled data also show PRP combined with minoxidil outperforms either alone. It is the main option for men who will not take a DHT blocker.

Hair transplantation

Moves follicles from the back and sides, where they are not DHT sensitive, into areas of loss. It is the only treatment that restores hair where follicles have gone. It does not stop the loss continuing around it, which is why transplants without medical management so often need repeating.

What to do at each stage

Norwood 2, a mature hairline

Slight recession at the temples forming a shallow M is extremely common and often is not progressive pattern loss at all. The right move here is a baseline rather than treatment. Standardised photographs, dermoscopy to check whether hairs are miniaturising, and blood tests. If nothing is progressing, you have spent one appointment and saved yourself years of unnecessary treatment.

Norwood 3 and 3 vertex

This is the highest-value moment in the whole sequence and the one most men miss. Follicles are shrinking but alive, so a combination of medication and PRP can hold the line and rebuild density. Started here, the outcome over ten years is very different from the same man starting at Norwood 5.

Norwood 4 and 5

Still worth treating, with more realistic expectations. The band across the top and the areas of partial thinning usually retain viable follicles and respond, while the centre of the crown may not. This is where honest area-by-area assessment matters, because a blanket answer will overpromise on one zone and underpromise on another. Some men at this stage combine medical treatment with a transplant to the front.

Norwood 6 and 7

In the areas of complete loss, treatment will not bring hair back. A smooth scalp with no visible follicle openings means the follicles have closed. The honest recommendation is a surgical opinion for those zones, with medical treatment continuing to protect the hair you still have, since a transplant into an unprotected scalp is a short-term result.

What does not work, and what to stop paying for

Shampoos marketed for hair loss do not change density. Some improve scalp condition, which is worth having, but none reverses miniaturisation.

Large supplement stacks in men who are not deficient. Correcting a measured deficiency helps. Taking supplements on the assumption of one does not, and it is money better spent on finding out.

Rosemary oil as a standalone treatment for progressing loss. The one randomised trial behind it compared it with minoxidil 2 percent, the weaker formulation, in 100 participants. It is an interesting adjunct, not a plan.

Repeating a treatment that has had six to twelve months and produced nothing. That is long enough for a fair assessment, and continuing unchanged rarely changes the outcome. Something is usually missing, most often an untreated contributor or a diagnosis that is not pattern loss.

Why testing comes before treatment

Pattern loss is genetic, but the things that make it worse are frequently measurable and correctable. Low ferritin and iron stores, thyroid dysfunction, low vitamin D, B12 or zinc all suppress hair growth, and a follicle short of what it needs will not respond fully to any stimulus.

NICE and the British Association of Dermatologists both stress identifying the underlying cause before treating hair loss. In practice that means examination, dermoscopy to read follicle viability area by area, a biopsy where a scarring alopecia is suspected, and a blood panel interpreted against hair-relevant targets rather than laboratory reference ranges.

This is also how you avoid the worst outcome in this category, which is a man treated for pattern loss for a year while a scarring alopecia quietly destroys his hairline.

What treatment costs in London

Flagship Harley Street and Mayfair clinics commonly charge £600 to £850 or more per PRP session, and London practices generally charge 50 to 70 percent more than clinics outside the capital. A UK hair transplant runs £5,000 to £17,000, with a 2,500-graft Harley Street procedure around £6,800.

Our care is doctor-led and priced below flagship rates, with your plan and the figure confirmed after your free suitability review. The honest framing is that early treatment is by far the cheapest version of this problem, since a transplant later costs several times a year of medical management now, and does nothing about the hair around it.

The suitability review

Every enquiry begins with a free doctor-led suitability review rather than a booking. A GMC-registered doctor stages you accurately, examines the scalp with dermoscopy area by area, reviews or arranges your bloods, and gives one of two answers.

Approved for treatment, with which areas can respond, which cannot, what to expect at three, six and twelve months, and the cost before you commit. Or not approved, which regularly means a surgical opinion for zones that have closed, or simply that nothing is progressing and you do not need treatment yet.

We do not perform hair transplants, so our view on whether you need one has no commercial pull either way.

Why people choose The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness

We are doctor-led and blood-test-first, treating from 10 Portman Square in Marylebone and the Light Centre in Belgravia. Diagnosis, testing, prescribing and the full regenerative range sit under one roof, so the recommendation follows your scalp rather than a product line.

Every treatment is performed by GMC-registered doctors, no clinician treats a patient here until they have completed 100 supervised treatments, and we train other clinicians through our Academy. 87% of hair restoration patients at The London PRP Clinic show visible improvement at their week-16 photo review.

Frequently asked questions about hair loss treatment for men

What is the best hair loss treatment for men?

There is no single best treatment. Norwood 2 to 4 responds well to medication and PRP because follicles are still alive, while Norwood 6 to 7 needs a transplant in the areas of complete loss. Your stage decides it.

Does PRP work for male pattern hair loss?

Yes, for follicles that are miniaturising rather than gone. A 2025 meta-analysis of 43 randomised controlled trials and 1,877 participants found PRP increases hair density, and it works best combined with minoxidil.

Can I treat hair loss without finasteride?

Yes. PRP has no hormonal action and topical minoxidil works on the growth cycle rather than hormones, which makes them the route for men who will not lower their DHT.

How early should I start treatment?

As early as possible. Follicles respond while they are shrinking and not once they have closed, so the same loss is more treatable now than it will be in three years.

Do hair loss shampoos work?

They do not change density. Some improve scalp condition, which is worth having, but none reverses miniaturisation.

When do I need a transplant instead?

When the follicles in the area have closed, typically Norwood 6 to 7 and parts of the crown at Norwood 5. Medical treatment should continue alongside to protect the hair around the graft.
