How Many PRP Sessions Do You Need for Hair Growth

For pattern hair loss, a course of several PRP appointments is common in hair-loss studies, but there is no single proven schedule for everyone. Three appointments about a month apart is one studied approach. It is not a guarantee of regrowth, and a bigger package is not automatically more effective. The diagnosis, response, risks and cost should guide whether you start or repeat treatment.
Ask The London PRP Clinic about a diagnosis-led hair treatment plan. Bring your previous treatment history and questions so the consultation focuses on what is worth doing next.
What schedules have actually been studied?
A 2022 review in the Journal of Personalized Medicine included 15 clinical trials. Several used three monthly treatments, while others used two treatments, more frequent appointments or additional treatments. Preparation methods, participants and follow-up also differed. These are study protocols, not a universal prescription.
The review did not find a statistically significant relationship between the total number of treatments and the change in hair density across the groups it analysed. That does not prove session count never matters. It does mean this review cannot justify a claim that completing a particular package produces a fixed percentage improvement over stopping earlier. Read the 2022 review and its trial table.
What can the research say about results?
The 2022 review reported an increase from about 142 to 178 hairs per square centimetre across its treatment groups. These are pooled before-and-after figures, not a guaranteed personal result or a clean estimate of benefit over placebo. Some placebo-treated areas also improved. The authors describe substantial variation in study design and treatment methods.
A larger 2025 review in Dermatology and Therapy included 43 randomised trials involving 1,877 participants with different forms of alopecia. It found evidence of improved hair density, but also substantial differences between studies and incomplete reporting of PRP composition. It does not establish one optimal course or maintenance interval for every person with pattern hair loss. Read the 2025 systematic review.
Discuss whether PRP fits your hair-loss diagnosis. Ask for an explanation of the evidence, alternatives and review point before committing to a course.
Does everyone need maintenance?
Do not assume you must have two to four treatments every year forever. The evidence cited here does not establish that schedule for everyone. Ask what a repeat treatment is intended to change, how the response will be measured and when the plan will be reconsidered.
Hair loss can continue for reasons that PRP does not remove. That is different from saying all the time and money spent on an initial course will be lost if you miss a top-up. A review should consider whether there was a worthwhile response, whether another diagnosis or treatment needs attention, and whether further injections are justified.
Agree a review point before starting
Ask the treating clinician to explain the likely diagnosis, alternatives, proposed number and spacing of appointments, total fee, risks and follow-up. Agree how photographs or measurements will be compared. Do not judge success from an unstandardised photograph alone or assume every change is caused by PRP.
Tell the clinician about medicines, medical conditions and previous treatment. Do not stop prescribed medication to fit a treatment schedule without advice from the prescriber. Ask what to do if there is no meaningful improvement, or if the scalp becomes painful or otherwise concerning.
What does a course cost at The London PRP Clinic?
Hair PRP costs £450 per session. A course of three costs £1,215, a 10% saving against three individual sessions. Hair consultation costs £150. Confirm which assessment, follow-up and any separate costs apply before booking. The right starting point is a diagnosis and a written plan, not the largest package.
Ask about hair consultation availability and the total cost. Tell the team what you have already tried and whether you have a diagnosis.
Questions to ask before paying for a course
Will more sessions give me faster results? Not necessarily. The studies use different protocols, and the 2022 review did not find a clear relationship between total session count and density change. Ask why extra appointments are recommended in your case.
Must I commit to maintenance now? Ask for an agreed review point rather than assuming an open-ended course is necessary. Further treatment should have a clear reason.
When should I judge the response? Ask which follow-up point is appropriate for the proposed protocol and how results will be compared. The cited studies used different assessment periods, so a fixed promise of visible growth by a particular week is not reliable.
What if I do not respond? Review the diagnosis and the treatment plan with the clinician. More injections are not automatically the right answer.
