Nervous about needles before PRP? Plan the appointment first

Can I have PRP if I am frightened of needles?

Needle anxiety does not automatically rule out PRP. It does mean the team should know before you book or arrive. PRP involves collecting blood and then using the prepared plasma in the proposed treatment. Ask what your particular procedure involves and what support can be agreed. You do not have to hide a previous faint or force yourself through an appointment without a plan.

Feeling faint and feeling panicky are different

Guy's and St Thomas' explains that some people have a fall in blood pressure linked to needle fear and may faint, while others feel panicky without fainting. The coping approach can differ. Tell the clinician which has happened to you, how recently, and whether you were injured or needed medical help. Do not label every collapse as ordinary needle anxiety without assessment. [1]

What to tell the team in advance

Explain whether the difficult part is seeing a needle, the blood draw, the injection, pain, or feeling unable to stop. Mention what helped previously. You can ask whether you may look away, lie back, have a pause or bring a support person. These are requests to discuss, not promises that every arrangement is available.

Techniques should fit your symptoms

The hospital guidance describes applied muscle tension for people whose fear is linked to fainting and breathing for relaxation for people who panic without feeling faint. Read the instructions and ask a healthcare professional whether they suit you, especially if you have a health problem affecting exercise or muscle tensing. Practise away from the procedure rather than trying something unfamiliar with a needle in place. [1]

Discuss an assessment on WhatsApp

Do not improvise preparation or pain relief

Ask the clinic for the instructions for your treatment. Do not fast, take extra medicines or stop prescribed treatment because someone else did so before PRP. If you want to discuss numbing or another comfort measure, ask what is appropriate, what it changes and whether it affects the treatment plan. No procedure should be sold as guaranteed painless.

You can pause the decision

Consent is an ongoing discussion. GMC cosmetic-intervention guidance says patients must have enough information and time to decide. If fear makes it hard to take in the explanation, ask for written information and time to consider it. An assessment can be useful even if you decide not to proceed with treatment that day. [2]

A better way to enquire

Tell The London PRP Clinic by The Wellness: I am interested in an assessment, but I have needle anxiety or a history of fainting. Can we discuss the procedure and a plan before I commit? Include the treatment area so the team can explain the right process. Choosing care you can manage safely is more important than rushing into a package.

Common questions

Do I need to watch the blood draw? Ask the team; looking away may be possible. Does nervousness mean I cannot give consent? Not automatically, but you should be able to understand the discussion and decide freely. What if I feel unwell during treatment? Tell the treating team immediately rather than trying to push through.
