How to Prepare for PRP: A Doctor-Led Checklist (Sleep, Medicines, Aftercare)

Preparing well for PRP is about getting the basics right, telling your doctor everything, and arriving rested and hydrated. Here is a practical checklist for the weeks and days before treatment, and an honest note on what the evidence does and does not show.

An honest note on sleep, stress and PRP
You may have read that sleeping more or lowering stress "boosts" PRP results by a stated percentage. We have not found controlled trial evidence for any such figure, and we do not make that claim. What we can say is practical: good sleep, steady eating and managing stress support general health and recovery, and arriving unwell, dehydrated or exhausted makes the appointment harder. The things that matter most for safety are medical, and your doctor needs to know about them.
Free checklist: before your PRP appointment
Two to four weeks before
1. Book a consultation so a doctor can confirm PRP suits your problem. Phone £59, video £150 or in person at Unit 4, 10 Portman Square, London W1H 6AZ £220.
2. Tell the doctor about every medicine and supplement you take, including blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatories and herbal products. Do not stop any prescribed medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
3. Tell the doctor about blood disorders, infections, a low platelet count, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any recent illness.
4. For hair PRP, mention recent changes in medication, diet, stress or a recent illness, since these can all affect shedding.
The week before
5. Eat regular meals and drink water normally. Aim for a few ordinary nights of good sleep, without changing your routine dramatically.
6. Avoid new skincare actives or hair products on the area to be treated unless your doctor says otherwise.
7. Arrange the day around the appointment: for most people there is little downtime, but you may prefer a quiet evening.
On the day
8. Eat beforehand and drink water. Arrive with clean skin or hair, without make-up or styling products on the area.
9. Bring your medicine list and any previous results or letters.

Timeline: what to expect after treatment
Mild redness, tenderness or swelling at the treated area is common straight after treatment and usually settles within days. Results build gradually over months, not days, and they vary from person to person, so a doctor will agree review points with you. For hair, many clinics plan an initial course of three sessions followed by maintenance; at The London PRP Clinic a single session is £450 and a course of three is £1,215.
Red flags: when to contact a doctor
Contact us or your GP promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, fever or feeling unwell after any injection. Call 999 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
