Postpartum Hair Loss: What Is Normal, How Long It Lasts and When to Get Checked

Shedding a lot of hair a few months after having a baby is very common, and for most women it settles. Here is what is happening, what the evidence says about recovery, and when it is worth getting checked.

What is postpartum hair loss?

The British Association of Dermatologists lists childbirth as a common trigger of telogen effluvium, a temporary increase in hair shedding. Normally about 15% of scalp hair is in the shedding phase; in telogen effluvium this rises to 30% or more, and it often starts around 3 months after the trigger (BAD: Telogen effluvium). That fits what many mothers notice: heavy shedding from around 3 months after the birth.

Will it grow back?

BAD says telogen effluvium usually gets completely better without treatment. The shedding phase lasts between 3 and 6 months, then new hair starts to grow, though it may take many months for volume and thickness to return to normal. BAD also notes that medication does not speed up the process of regrowth. That is reassuring, and it is why we will not tell you that you need treatment if you do not.

Timeline: what to expect

Around 3 months after delivery: shedding often begins. 3 to 6 months of shedding is typical. After that: new short hairs appear, often at the hairline. Full density can take many months. Individual experience varies, so use this as a guide rather than a rule.

When it is worth getting checked

Shedding that carries on beyond 6 months, patchy loss, a sore or scaly scalp, or tiredness, weight change, feeling cold or low mood should be assessed. Low iron and thyroid problems can cause hair loss and are more common after pregnancy, and BAD notes that telogen effluvium can recur if an underlying cause such as iron deficiency is not corrected. A GP can arrange blood tests on the NHS, which is a sensible first step. If you would like a private doctor-led assessment, we can arrange one quickly.

Free checklist: supporting your hair in the meantime

- Eat regularly, including iron-rich foods, protein, fruit and vegetables (the BAD suggests a balanced diet may help).

- Ask your GP about blood tests for iron and thyroid function.

- Be gentle: avoid tight hairstyles and excess heat.

- Take a monthly photo in the same light to track regrowth.

- Tell your GP if your mood is low. Looking after your wellbeing matters as much as your hair.

Where does PRP fit?

For most mothers postpartum shedding settles on its own, so PRP is not usually needed for this. Some women with persistent thinning, or thinning that proves to be pattern hair loss as well, ask about it. A doctor will assess the cause first and tell you honestly whether PRP is likely to help. Consultations are £59 by phone, £150 by video or £220 in person at Unit 4, 10 Portman Square, London W1H 6AZ. PRP is £450 per session or £1,215 for a course of 3.
