Why Private Sexual Health Screening

NHS sexual health clinics provide an essential public health service, but they are under significant pressure. Waiting times for appointments can be days or weeks. Walk-in clinics involve unpredictable waits. The environment can feel clinical and impersonal. And for many people, the lack of confidentiality from their NHS GP record is a genuine concern.

Private sexual health screening at The Online GP by The Wellness addresses each of these issues. You are seen the same day, by a GMC-registered doctor, in a calm and private clinical environment. Your appointment is unhurried, allowing proper discussion of your concerns, risk factors, and testing needs. Results are communicated by a doctor who explains them clearly and can prescribe treatment on the spot. And nothing is recorded on your NHS record unless you specifically ask for it to be.

We understand that sexual health consultations require sensitivity, professionalism, and discretion. Our doctors provide a completely judgement-free service. Whatever your concern, whatever your history, whatever your relationship situation, you will be treated with respect and clinical professionalism.

What We Test For

Comprehensive STI panel. Covers the infections that should be included in any thorough sexual health screen: HIV (types 1 and 2) via fourth-generation antigen/antibody testing, hepatitis B (surface antigen and antibodies), hepatitis C (antibodies), syphilis (treponemal and non-treponemal testing), chlamydia (NAAT testing from urine or swab), and gonorrhoea (NAAT testing from urine or swab).

Extended panel. Additional tests available based on your risk profile and symptoms: herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (type-specific serology), mycoplasma genitalium, ureaplasma species, trichomonas vaginalis, and HPV.

Targeted testing. If you have a specific concern or exposure, your doctor will recommend the appropriate tests. Not everyone needs every test, and your doctor will tailor the panel to your individual situation.

Repeat screening. For some infections, a window period exists between exposure and detectability. Your doctor will advise whether repeat testing at a later date is recommended to confirm results.

How the Process Works

Book your appointment. WhatsApp, email, or call. Let us know what you would like tested or describe your concern. Same-day appointments are available most days.

Doctor consultation. Your GMC-registered doctor conducts a confidential discussion about your sexual history, any symptoms, and your risk factors. This is done sensitively and professionally. Based on this assessment, the doctor recommends the appropriate tests.

Sample collection. Blood samples are taken by venepuncture (a simple blood draw from the arm). Urine samples or swabs are collected for chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing. The process is quick and straightforward.

Laboratory analysis. Samples are sent to an accredited UK laboratory. Most results are available within 24 to 48 hours. Specialised tests may take up to 5 working days.

Results and treatment. A doctor contacts you to discuss your results. If all tests are negative, you receive reassurance and advice on ongoing sexual health. If any test is positive, your doctor explains the diagnosis, prescribes appropriate treatment (often available the same day for bacterial infections), provides partner notification advice, and arranges follow-up as needed.

Confidentiality: Your Privacy Is Absolute

At The Online GP by The Wellness, your sexual health consultation and results are entirely confidential. We operate as a private healthcare service with no connection to NHS records systems. Your results are not shared with your NHS GP, your employer, your family, your insurance company, or anyone else unless you explicitly and specifically ask us to do so.

This is not simply a policy. It is a fundamental principle of our service. Many patients choose private sexual health screening specifically because they want absolute confidentiality that the NHS system cannot always guarantee (NHS sexual health clinic results may be visible on NHS records in some circumstances).

Your data is stored securely in compliance with UK GDPR and data protection law. We follow the same strict confidentiality standards required by the GMC of all registered doctors.

When to Get Tested

After a new sexual partner. A baseline screen after any new sexual contact is a responsible health practice, regardless of symptoms.

After unprotected sex. If a condom was not used, or if a condom failed, screening is recommended. The timing of testing matters: some infections are detectable within days, while others (particularly HIV and hepatitis) have window periods of 2 to 12 weeks.

If you have symptoms. Unusual discharge, pain during urination, genital sores, rashes, itching, pelvic pain, or pain during sex all warrant prompt assessment. Do not wait for symptoms to resolve on their own.

If a partner tells you they have an STI. Get tested promptly and begin treatment if indicated. Many STIs are easily treatable if caught early.

As part of routine health management. If you are sexually active with multiple partners, annual or more frequent screening is a sensible health practice. Many STIs are asymptomatic, meaning you can carry and transmit infections without knowing.

Before starting a new relationship. Some couples choose to be screened together before becoming sexually intimate. We offer a supportive, professional environment for this.

Beyond Screening: Complete Sexual Health Care

Our doctors provide comprehensive sexual health care that goes beyond testing.

Contraception. All forms of contraception are available including combined pill, progesterone-only pill, emergency contraception, and discussion of long-acting methods with referral for fitting if appropriate.

HPV vaccination. Available privately for adults who missed the NHS school programme.

PrEP and PEP counselling. If you are at risk of HIV exposure, our doctors can discuss pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with you and arrange access.

Erectile dysfunction and sexual function. Thorough assessment, blood testing to identify underlying causes (hormonal, cardiovascular, metabolic), and treatment including prescription medication where appropriate.

Partner notification support. If you test positive for an STI, your doctor can advise on how to notify partners sensitively and effectively.
