This guide explains what the published research shows, which questions to ask about suitability, and what PRP costs at The London PRP Clinic. Individual results cannot be predicted from a study average.

Short answer

The 2025 systematic review A Systematic Review of Platelet-Rich Plasma Versus Platelet-Rich Fibrin for Periorbital Rejuvenation included 14 studies and found more evidence for PRP in pigmentation than for PRF. Results and protocols varied; larger randomised trials were needed. Platelet-Rich Plasma in Facial Rejuvenation: A Systematic Appraisal of the Available Clinical Evidence reviewed 36 studies with 3,172 patients and judged the clinical evidence very limited. These findings do not predict an individual result.

What the research says, in plain terms

  • Periorbital review (14 studies): PRP showed stronger evidence for hyperpigmentation. Both PRP and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) had favourable safety profiles, with mild and temporary adverse effects.

  • Durability: pigmentation improvements with PRP were sustained at similar intervals (around six months) in the studies reviewed.

  • Facial rejuvenation review (36 studies, 3,172 patients): all but 7 studies reported significant improvement, but the authors judged the clinical evidence very limited, with inconsistent outcome measures, and most studies combined PRP with other treatments.

  • How to read the findings: the periorbital review calls for larger randomised trials with standardised measures. It does not establish the improvement an individual should expect.

Who may be a good fit

  • Ask what is causing your under-eye concern, what outcome PRP would target, and what evidence supports that use. The cited periorbital review does not establish a single patient-selection rule.

Who it may not suit

  • Ask about alternatives, contraindications and whether treatment should be postponed. A study average does not determine your suitability.

Your doctor will tell you honestly at consultation if PRP is not the right choice.

What a treatment involves

  • The cited periorbital review describes preparation from blood and injections around the eyes, with methods and schedules varying between studies. Ask for the proposed procedure and review plan in writing.

After treatment: what to expect

  • The cited periorbital review reports temporary redness, swelling and bruising, and one study reported fainting. It does not establish a universal recovery deadline. Ask your treating clinician for written aftercare and contact details.
