Weekend and Evening Doctor in London 2026. Where to Be Seen on a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday

A calm sea under bands of gold and grey cloud, smoothed by a long exposure

Most illness does not keep office hours, and the gap in NHS primary care is widest exactly when people need it. Since October 2022, NHS enhanced access requires primary care networks to offer some appointments from 6.30pm to 8pm on weekdays and from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, but those slots are limited, usually booked in advance, and there is no routine NHS GP care on a Sunday or bank holiday. That leaves NHS 111, urgent treatment centres, pharmacies and emergency departments, each of which is right for some problems and wrong for others. Knowing which to use saves hours. A pharmacy can now treat 7 common conditions under Pharmacy First without a GP, including sore throat, sinusitis and urinary infection in women aged 16 to 64. NHS 111 is the right first call when you are unsure. An emergency department is for emergencies, and using it for anything else means a long wait behind people who are critically unwell. The Online GP by The Wellness sees patients the same day, 7 days a week, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays, by video from £150, with in-person fees at 10 Portman Square available by enquiry. Home visits cost £450; hotel visits cost £495 daytime / £595 evening. Enquire for office visits and any weekend or bank-holiday surcharge. Prescriptions, fit notes and referral letters depend on clinical assessment. Fees appear further down this page.

Where should you go out of hours

Call 999 or go to an emergency department for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke such as facial weakness, arm weakness or slurred speech, severe bleeding, collapse, a seizure that will not stop, severe allergic reaction, a baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38 degrees or above, or a child who is floppy, unresponsive or has a rash that does not fade under a glass.

Use an urgent treatment centre for injuries that are not life-threatening, including suspected broken bones, sprains, cuts needing stitches and minor burns, since many have X-ray on site.

Use a pharmacy for the 7 Pharmacy First conditions, which are sinusitis in anyone aged 12 and over, sore throat from 5, earache in children aged 1 to 17, infected insect bites and impetigo from 1, shingles from 18, and uncomplicated urinary infection in women aged 16 to 64. A pharmacist can assess you and supply prescription medicine where indicated, without an appointment.

Call NHS 111 when you are unsure, and it will direct you to the right service.

Use a private doctor for everything that sits between those, which is most of what happens on an evening or weekend. An unwell child who needs examining rather than triaging. A chest infection that needs listening to. Medication you have run out of. A fit note needed by Monday. A problem that has been worsening all week and cannot wait until the surgery reopens.

What a same-day private appointment covers

Examination, which is the part remote triage cannot do. Ears, throat, chest, abdomen, skin and joints examined properly, with temperature, pulse, blood pressure and oxygen saturation measured, so pneumonia is separated from bronchitis and a urinary infection from something more serious.

Prescriptions issued in the appointment, including repeat medication you have run out of, sent to a pharmacy open near you. Where a medicine is controlled, such as strong painkillers, sleeping tablets or ADHD medication, it cannot appropriately be issued at a first consultation without established records, and we say so before you book.

Fit notes, referral letters and insurance forms depend on clinical assessment. Confirm document fees, requirements and timing before booking.

Blood tests arranged at an accredited partner laboratory, and imaging at the specialist centre best equipped for the question, usually within days.

Children seen from any age, with siblings in the same visit, and adults and older relatives assessed at home when travelling is difficult.

Ask whether you need to be seen tonight on WhatsApp or email team@thewellnesslondon.com.

Why evenings and weekends matter more than people think

Fever in children peaks in the evening, which is why so many worried parents are awake at 10pm deciding whether to go to hospital. NICE guideline NG143 sets out a traffic light system for assessing a feverish child under 5, and an examination by a doctor is what places a child in the green, amber or red group. Most are green and can be managed safely at home with clear advice on what to watch for.

Infections that start midweek often worsen by Friday, and waiting until Monday turns a straightforward chest or urinary infection into something harder to treat, particularly in older adults, where urinary infection can present as confusion rather than urinary symptoms.

Running out of essential medication at a weekend is a common and underestimated risk. Missing insulin, anti-epileptic drugs, anticoagulants, steroids or thyroid replacement for even a few days can cause real harm, and a UK prescription resolves it the same day.

And for people who work long hours, evenings and weekends are simply the only time they have. An appointment on a Saturday morning is the difference between being seen this week and not being seen at all.

What does a weekend doctor cost in London

Visiting doctor services in central London charge £400 to £600 and above for evening and weekend visits, with night and bank holiday surcharges taking several higher, and membership practices charge annual retainers running into thousands before any appointment. Walk-in private clinics charge £75 to £150 for short appointments, often without examination equipment. Harley Street consultations sit at £250 to £350 in normal hours.

Confirm availability, the total fee and what is included before booking. Ask about any weekend, bank-holiday or out-of-area charge; pharmacy costs are separate.

Why The Wellness is the best weekend and evening doctor in London

Because you are examined rather than triaged. The questions that matter out of hours, whether a child is safe at home, whether a cough is pneumonia, whether an infection needs antibiotics, are answered by examination, and a telephone assessment cannot do that.

Because we tell you when you do not need us. Pharmacy First covers 7 common conditions free at weekends, and an emergency is an ambulance rather than an appointment. Saying so costs us bookings and is why the advice is worth trusting when it goes the other way.

Confirm the total fee and any evening, weekend or bank-holiday charge before booking.

Because the appointment finishes the job. The prescription is issued, the fit note is written, the blood test is arranged and the referral is booked, rather than being left for Monday.

And because the same doctor can come to you. A home or hotel visit on a Sunday evening is often faster than getting an unwell child or an elderly parent across London.

Cannot get a GP appointment covers same-day access during the week, private GP for children and families covers unwell children in detail, hotel doctor in London covers visits to hotels, and running out of essential medication covers urgent prescriptions.

Not routinely on the NHS, since NHS enhanced access covers weekday evenings and Saturdays only. At The Wellness video consultations are from £150. Home visits cost £450; hotel visits cost £495 daytime / £595 evening. Confirm Sunday and bank-holiday availability, any surcharge and in-person fees before booking.

Is there a GP open on Saturday in London

NHS enhanced access provides some Saturday appointments from 9am to 5pm through primary care networks, usually booked in advance. Privately, The Wellness sees patients the same day on Saturdays by video, in clinic or at home.

Should I go to A&E or see a GP

Go to A&E or call 999 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, collapse or a seriously unwell child. For most other problems out of hours, a pharmacy, NHS 111 or a same-day doctor is quicker and more appropriate.

A fit note depends on clinical assessment. Confirm the fee, requirements and timing before booking, especially if you have a Monday deadline.

How much is a doctor home visit in the evening

Home visits cost £450. Hotel visits cost £495 daytime / £595 evening. Enquire for office visits, additional household members, and any weekend or bank-holiday surcharge. Confirm availability and the total fee before booking.
