NHS urges 50-somethings to return bowel screening kits

2 min read

The NHS is calling for more people in their 50s to complete bowel cancer screening, following the release of data indicating lower uptake in this age group. The latest annual figures show that participation among those newly eligible for the programme lags behind other cohorts.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, 56.2% of 54-year-olds took part in screening, according to NHS England. This rate is notably below the level seen in older age groups, prompting the health service to highlight the importance of returning the home testing kits.

Weekly cancer detection

The bowel screening programme identifies a significant number of malignancies. NHS England reported that the initiative detects around 100 cancers per week. The test used is a faecal immunochemical test, known as FIT, which individuals can complete in their own homes.

Bowel cancer screening in England is offered to people aged 54 to 74. The programme relies on the return of these kits to identify potential cases early, when treatment may be more effective.

Addressing lower uptake

The focus on the 50s demographic follows the publication of the participation data. While the overall programme reaches a majority of invitees, the figures for the youngest eligible group have drawn specific attention. The 56.2% completion rate for 54-year-olds underscores a gap that the NHS is seeking to close.

Health officials are emphasising the straightforward nature of the FIT kit, which requires a small stool sample and can be posted back to a laboratory for analysis. The process is designed to be convenient and private, removing common barriers to clinical testing.

The push to increase kit returns aligns with broader efforts to improve early diagnosis. Detecting bowel cancer before symptoms develop can lead to less invasive treatment and better outcomes. The weekly detection figure of 100 cancers illustrates the programme's role in identifying cases that might otherwise go unnoticed until a later stage.
