NHS Urges Adults in Their 50s to Return Bowel Screening Kits

1 min read

NHS England has issued a call for millions of people in their 50s to complete and return their bowel cancer screening kits. The appeal follows the release of new annual data indicating that participation rates are lower within this age bracket compared to others.

The latest figures, covering the period from April 2024 to March, show that uptake among those newly eligible for screening is a particular concern. According to the data, only 56.2% of 54-year-olds took part in the bowel screening programme during that year.

The screening programme is described by the NHS as using lifesaving tests. The source title states that around 100 cancers are found each week through screening.

The health service is focusing its message on people in their 50s, encouraging them to use the kits when they are sent out. The lower participation rate in this group was highlighted in the new annual bowel screening figures.
