UKHSA Issues Updated Flu Vaccine PGD Template

The UK Health Security Agency has published an updated patient group direction template covering inactivated and live attenuated influenza vaccines for the seasonal programme.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) published updated guidance on 18 June 2026 in the form of a patient group direction (PGD) template designed to support the delivery of influenza vaccines within the national seasonal flu vaccination programme.

What the PGD Covers

The template addresses two distinct categories of influenza vaccine: inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) and live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). A PGD is a formal written instruction that permits certain qualified healthcare professionals to supply or administer a medicine to a defined group of patients without requiring an individual prescription for each case.

Role Within the Seasonal Programme

According to the UKHSA, the direction is intended to operate within the framework of the UK's established seasonal flu vaccination programme. By providing a standardised template, the agency aims to support consistent and legally compliant vaccine administration across eligible settings and professional groups.

The publication follows a broader pattern of UKHSA activity in maintaining and updating clinical tools that underpin annual immunisation efforts ahead of each flu season.
