Kidney
eGFR
Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. Measured in clinic at The Wellness in Marylebone, read by a doctor.
What It Is
The estimated glomerular filtration rate is a calculation of how much blood the kidneys filter each minute, usually derived from a creatinine measurement together with age and sex. It is the standard summary figure for overall kidney function.
Why It Matters
The kidneys filter waste, balance fluid and minerals, and help regulate blood pressure, and they can lose function quietly over many years. Tracking eGFR over time gives an early view of that trajectory while there is most room to act.
What Results Can Suggest
A lower eGFR can suggest reduced kidney filtration, and a persistently reduced value is associated with chronic kidney disease. Because the figure leans on creatinine, unusual muscle mass or a recent high-protein meal can sway it, and cystatin C is sometimes used to double-check. Discuss your result and its trend with a doctor.
