How an echocardiogram at The Wellness works

A GMC registered doctor performs the echocardiogram and talks you through the chambers, valves, wall motion and ejection fraction as they appear on the screen. The written report follows the same day, typically within 2 hours, for £495. For a fuller picture, the Heart Health Scan at £1,495 adds a carotid artery Doppler and an aortic aneurysm check in the same visit, and onward referral to a cardiologist is arranged where it is needed.

What you get at The Wellness

  • A full echocardiogram performed and interpreted by a doctor, £495, or a focused screening echo, £445.
  • A written report the same day, typically within 2 hours.
  • The Heart Health Scan with carotid and aortic scans, £1,495.
  • No GP referral needed, and onward referral arranged where needed.

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor checks a scan is the right test first, a consultant radiologist reports it, and a doctor goes through the findings with you. Where MRI answers the question it is preferred, because it uses no ionising radiation.

About 3.9% of brain and body MRI scans in adults without symptoms show a potentially serious incidental finding, and about half of those are suspected cancers, which is why every finding needs a doctor and a plan. Gibson and colleagues, Potentially serious incidental findings on brain and body MRI of apparently asymptomatic adults, systematic review and meta-analysis, BMJ, 2018

MRI uses no ionising radiation. A CT of the chest gives about 8 mSv and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis about 10 mSv, against 2.1 mSv a year of natural background radiation in the UK. UK Health Security Agency, Patient dose information guidance, GOV.UK

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Questions to ask before any echocardiogram

  • Who performs the scan, a doctor or a sonographer?
  • Who reads it, and when does the report arrive?
  • What will the scan answer, and what will it not show?
  • What happens if something is found?

How to read an echocardiogram price

Check whether the consultant’s fee and the report are included, because some hospital prices are an estimated guide.

Check whether you need a referral first, because that adds an appointment and a fee.

What the evidence says

NICE advises that people with suspected heart failure and an NT-proBNP level above 2,000 ng/litre have specialist assessment and transthoracic echocardiography within 2 weeks, and within 6 weeks for a level between 400 and 2,000. NICE guideline NG106, Chronic heart failure in adults, diagnosis and management, 2018

European guidelines name echocardiography as the key test to confirm valve disease and to assess its severity and outlook. Vahanian and colleagues, 2021 ESC/EACTS Guidelines for the management of valvular heart disease, European Heart Journal, 2022

Warning signs at any provider

  • An echo sold for chest pain that may come from the coronary arteries.
  • No named person who performs or reports the scan.
  • A report that arrives days later with no one to explain it.

What else people ask

At the providers on this page an echocardiogram costs from £550 at EchoMed to £738 at Cleveland Clinic London. At The Wellness a focused screening echo is £445 and a full echocardiogram £495, performed by a doctor with a written report the same day. We read each price on the provider's own website on 23 October 2026.

No. An echocardiogram shows the heart’s chambers, valves and pumping, and it does not image the coronary arteries. A CT coronary angiogram or a calcium score looks at the arteries.

Some hospitals ask for a GP or consultant referral. At The Wellness you can ask for the scan directly, and the doctor who performs it checks it is the right test for your question.
