How much does genome sequencing cost in the UK?

At The Wellness clinical genome testing runs from £1,695 for the 84 genes where a finding changes what a doctor does to £8,500 for the whole genome, and a doctor goes through every result with you. Consumer DNA kits in the UK cost from £159 to £555, and a London clinic includes whole genome sequencing in an assessment from £13,500. How genome testing at The Wellness works

A doctor speaks with you first, and the sample is taken at home or in Marylebone. The laboratory is accredited to CLIA, CAP and ISO 15189, and you choose how much is reported, from the 84 genes where a finding changes what a doctor does at £1,695 to the whole genome at £8,500. A doctor goes through every result with you, a registered genetic counsellor joins where a finding appears, and your report is updated if a finding is later reclassified. The raw data is yours to keep.

What you get at The Wellness

  • The 84 genes where a finding changes what a doctor does, with a doctor's results consultation, £1,695.
  • Around 200 heart and cancer genes with Lp(a), ApoB and a genetic counsellor, £2,850.
  • The whole genome at 30x with a counsellor before and after, and a doctor review every year for three years, £8,500.
  • Sequencing in a laboratory accredited to CLIA, CAP and ISO 15189.
  • Your report is updated if a finding is reclassified, and the raw data is yours.

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor reads every result with you and says what it means for your care, and what, if anything, to test next.

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Questions to ask before any genome test

  • Is the laboratory accredited, and is this test within its accredited scope?
  • How many genes are reported, and which ones?
  • Who explains a finding, and is a genetic counsellor involved?
  • What happens if a variant is reclassified later?

How to read a genome test price

Check whether the test sequences your DNA or genotypes selected markers, because the two read very different amounts.

Check whether a doctor or counsellor is included, and whether a plan renews each year.

What the evidence says

A clinical laboratory asked to confirm variants reported in consumer raw DNA data found that 40% were false positives, and some variants labelled as raising risk were classed as benign. Tandy-Connor and colleagues, False-positive results released by direct-to-consumer genetic tests highlight the importance of clinical confirmation testing, Genetics in Medicine, 2018

Interpretation changes with time, and in one large hereditary cancer dataset 7.7% of unique variants of uncertain significance were later reclassified. Mersch and colleagues, Prevalence of variant reclassification following hereditary cancer genetic testing, JAMA, 2018

Warning signs at any provider

  • A health finding with no offer to confirm it clinically.
  • No named laboratory accreditation.
  • Hundreds of reports with no one to explain them.

What else people ask

At The Wellness the whole genome, with a genetic counsellor before and after and a doctor review every year for three years, is £8,500, and clinical testing of the 84 genes where a finding changes what a doctor does is £1,695. Consumer DNA kits on this page cost from £159 to £555. We read each price on the provider's own website on 23 October 2026.

No. 23andMe says genotyping looks at selected markers, while sequencing reads every letter in a stretch of DNA. A clinical laboratory asked to confirm variants from consumer raw data found that 40% were false positives.

A doctor explains the finding and what it means for your care, and a registered genetic counsellor joins the conversation. In The Sentinel and The Vantage, the first specialist consultation is included where a finding calls for one.
