How gut testing at The Wellness works

The Baseline starts with the tests that have the firmest evidence, calprotectin to tell inflammation from a sensitive gut, coeliac serology, a bowel cancer safety check and H. pylori, and a doctor reads them with you and writes a plan, £695. The Blueprint adds full microbiome sequencing and a registered nutritionist at £1,595, for people who want to go further once the serious causes are ruled out. The Specialist, £3,950, adds functional stool analysis, a breath test for bacterial overgrowth and a consultant gastroenterologist.

What you get at The Wellness

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor reads every result with you and says what it means for your care, and what, if anything, to test next.

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Questions to ask before any gut test

  • Do I have symptoms that need a doctor before any kit?
  • Does the test check for inflammation, coeliac disease or blood in the stool?
  • Which sequencing method is used, 16S or full sequencing?
  • Who explains the result, and will they sell me supplements?

What the evidence says

An international consensus of experts found that direct to consumer microbiome tests are sold without agreed regulation or proven value in clinical practice. Porcari and colleagues, International consensus statement on microbiome testing in clinical practice, Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2025

NICE recommends faecal calprotectin testing to help tell inflammatory bowel disease from irritable bowel syndrome in adults with recent onset lower gut symptoms, when cancer is not suspected. NICE diagnostics guidance DG11, Faecal calprotectin diagnostic tests for inflammatory diseases of the bowel, 2013

NICE advises coeliac blood testing for adults with persistent unexplained gut symptoms or irritable bowel syndrome. NICE guideline NG20, Coeliac disease, recognition, assessment and management, 2015

Warning signs at any provider

  • A kit offered to someone with blood in the stool or weight loss.
  • Supplements sold on the back of your own results.
  • A diagnosis drawn from a microbiome report.

What else people ask

At the providers on this page a home microbiome kit costs from £159 at Biomesight to £285 at YorkTest, and ZOE’s £149 test comes with a membership. At The Wellness doctor-led testing starts at £695, and full microbiome sequencing with a nutritionist is £1,595. We read each price on the provider's own website on 23 October 2026.

No. An international expert consensus found no proven value for direct to consumer microbiome tests in clinical practice. Coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease are tested for with blood and stool tests such as coeliac serology and calprotectin.

16S sequencing reads one marker gene and usually identifies bacteria to the level of the genus. Full, or shotgun, sequencing reads all the DNA in the sample and can reach the level of the species.
