The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor sees you, explains what they find, writes down what happens next, and the same practice is there for anything that follows.

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Seeing the same doctor matters. A systematic review found 22 studies of continuity of doctor care and mortality, and 18 of them reported lower death rates when patients saw the same doctor more often. Pereira Gray and colleagues, Continuity of care with doctors, a matter of life and death? A systematic review of continuity of care and mortality, BMJ Open, 2018

Questions to ask before any medical report

  • Who is the report for, and what does it need to answer?
  • Will a doctor examine me, or only read my records?
  • Is the report written to CPR Part 35 if it is for a court?
  • How long will it take, and is the fee fixed before I start?

How to read a medical report price

Check whether the examination is included, or charged as a separate appointment.

Check whether a court report includes reviewing your records, which takes the most time.

What the rules say

Under Civil Procedure Rule 35.3, an expert’s duty is to help the court on matters within their expertise, and that duty overrides any obligation to the person who instructed or pays them. Ministry of Justice, Civil Procedure Rules Part 35, Experts and assessors

Practice Direction 35 requires an expert report to include a statement that the expert understands and has complied with that duty, and a statement of truth. Ministry of Justice, Practice Direction 35, Experts and assessors

Warning signs at any provider

  • A court report with no statement of truth.
  • A report promised before the doctor has seen you or your records.
  • A fee that changes after the report is written.
