How a CT scan at The Wellness works

A doctor starts with the question you want answered and chooses the test with the least radiation that will answer it, which is sometimes MRI or ultrasound rather than CT. When CT is right, it runs on a 128-slice scanner with low-dose protocols as standard, from £695, or a calcium score of the heart at £750, and a consultant radiologist reports within 24 to 48 hours. A doctor then goes through the report with you.

What you get at The Wellness

  • 128-slice CT with low-dose protocols as standard, from £695.
  • A low-dose calcium score of the heart, £750.
  • A consultant radiologist reports within 24 to 48 hours.
  • A doctor justifies every scan first, and no GP referral is needed.
  • A full body MRI, with no radiation, where you want a baseline.

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor checks a scan is the right test first, a consultant radiologist reports it, and a doctor goes through the findings with you. Where MRI answers the question it is preferred, because it uses no ionising radiation.

About 3.9% of brain and body MRI scans in adults without symptoms show a potentially serious incidental finding, and about half of those are suspected cancers, which is why every finding needs a doctor and a plan. Gibson and colleagues, Potentially serious incidental findings on brain and body MRI of apparently asymptomatic adults, systematic review and meta-analysis, BMJ, 2018

MRI uses no ionising radiation. A CT of the chest gives about 8 mSv and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis about 10 mSv, against 2.1 mSv a year of natural background radiation in the UK. UK Health Security Agency, Patient dose information guidance, GOV.UK

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Questions to ask before any CT scan

  • What question will this scan answer?
  • Is there a test without radiation that would answer it?
  • Who reports the scan, and how soon?
  • Who explains the report, and is that included?

How to read a CT price

Check how many body areas the price covers, because most providers charge per area.

Check whether contrast, the report and a consultation are included, because several providers add them on top.

What the evidence says

The FDA states that it knows of no scientific evidence that whole body CT scanning of people without symptoms provides more benefit than harm. US Food and Drug Administration, Full-body CT scans, what you need to know

A CT of the chest gives about 8 mSv, roughly 3.6 years of natural background radiation in the UK, and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis about 10 mSv. UK Health Security Agency, Patient dose information guidance, GOV.UK

Under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, every exposure must be justified in advance by a practitioner who weighs its benefit against its harm for that person. Department of Health and Social Care, Guidance to the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, GOV.UK

Warning signs at any provider

  • A CT offered with no clinical question behind it.
  • Whole body CT sold to people without symptoms.
  • No named radiologist or reporting time.

What else people ask

At the providers on this page a single area CT costs from about £360 at Scan.com to £1,245 at Cromwell Hospital. At The Wellness a CT starts at £695 and a calcium score is £750, each reported within 24 to 48 hours. We read each price on the provider's own website on 23 October 2026.

Some hospitals ask for a GP or specialist referral. At The Wellness no GP referral is needed, and a doctor confirms the scan is justified before it is arranged, as UK law requires for every CT.

We do not offer whole body CT screening. The FDA knows of no evidence that it helps people without symptoms more than it harms them, so for a detailed baseline we offer a full body MRI, which uses no radiation.
