How an ultrasound at The Wellness works

On this page a scan is performed by a technician, a sonographer, an ultrasound practitioner or a radiologist, and reports take from the same day to a week. At The Wellness a GMC registered doctor performs every scan from £445, tells you what they see while you are on the couch, and sends a formal written report the same day, typically within 2 hours. If something needs more, the same doctor arranges the referral that day. No GP referral is needed.

What you get at The Wellness

  • A GMC registered doctor performs every scan, from £445.
  • The doctor explains the findings during the scan.
  • A formal written report follows the same day, typically within 2 hours.
  • An echocardiogram is £495, performed and interpreted by a doctor in real time.
  • No GP referral is needed, and onward referral is arranged the same day where needed.

The evidence behind how we do it

At The Wellness a doctor checks a scan is the right test first, a consultant radiologist reports it, and a doctor goes through the findings with you. Where MRI answers the question it is preferred, because it uses no ionising radiation.

About 3.9% of brain and body MRI scans in adults without symptoms show a potentially serious incidental finding, and about half of those are suspected cancers, which is why every finding needs a doctor and a plan. Gibson and colleagues, Potentially serious incidental findings on brain and body MRI of apparently asymptomatic adults, systematic review and meta-analysis, BMJ, 2018

MRI uses no ionising radiation. A CT of the chest gives about 8 mSv and a CT of the abdomen and pelvis about 10 mSv, against 2.1 mSv a year of natural background radiation in the UK. UK Health Security Agency, Patient dose information guidance, GOV.UK

Results that nobody acts on are a known failure in outpatient care. A systematic review of 19 studies found that between 6.8% and 62% of laboratory results were not followed up, and missed results were linked to delayed diagnoses. Callen and colleagues, Failure to follow-up test results for ambulatory patients, a systematic review, Journal of General Internal Medicine, 2012

Questions to ask before any private ultrasound

  • Who performs the scan, a doctor, a radiologist or a sonographer?
  • Who writes the report, and when will I have it?
  • Will someone explain the findings to me, or only send them?
  • What happens if something needs a further test or a specialist?
  • Is the scan I am booking the right one for my symptom?

How to read an ultrasound price

Compare who performs and reports the scan. A lower price often means a sonographer scans and the report follows days later.

Check whether a combined scan, such as the abdomen and pelvis together, is priced as one or as two.

Ask whether the report and images are included. Vista Health includes both.

What the evidence says

Ultrasound is the screening test for an aortic aneurysm. In England, men are invited for an abdominal ultrasound scan in the screening year they turn 65. GOV.UK, Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, programme overview

Ultrasound is part of how polycystic ovary syndrome is diagnosed. The 2023 international guideline includes polycystic ovarian morphology, assessed by ultrasound or AMH in adults, among its diagnostic criteria. Teede and colleagues, Recommendations from the 2023 international evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2023

Warning signs at any provider

  • The provider cannot say who will perform or report your scan.
  • The report is sent days later with nobody to explain it.
  • A scan is sold for a symptom it cannot answer, such as an echo for chest pain from the coronary arteries.
  • No plan for what happens if something is found.

What else people ask

At the six providers on this page a single scan costs from about £150 to about £500. The Scan Clinic charges £150 to £160 for an abdominal scan, Vista Health £175, London Private Ultrasound about £220, and The Wellness £445 with a doctor performing the scan. We read each price on the provider's own website on 23 October 2026.

It depends on the provider. Vista Health uses a technician or sonographer, The Scan Clinic an ultrasound practitioner, Nuffield Health a consultant radiologist, and at The Wellness a GMC registered doctor performs every scan.

At The Wellness the doctor explains the findings during the scan and a written report follows the same day, typically within 2 hours. Vista Health sends the report within three working days, and Nuffield Health sends results to your referrer within a week.

Not at The Wellness, The Scan Clinic, Vista Health or London Private Ultrasound. Nuffield Health asks for a referral from a healthcare professional.

Yes. You do not need to be registered with a UK doctor, and the report is written in English the same day, so you can take it home with you.
