Longevity medicine

Call 020 3951 3429

Longevity medicine aims to add healthy years by finding and treating the causes of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and frailty early. It starts with a £350 consultation, which comes off a programme taken within 30 days. Our programmes run from £6,995 to £34,995, and an advanced longevity blood panel is £1,395.

What longevity medicine is

Longevity medicine is prevention done in more detail than a routine check. It looks at what shortens healthy life most often, which is heart and blood vessel disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and loss of muscle and fitness, and tries to change your course years before any of them appear.European Heart Journal ESC guideline, 2021

It is not a way to stop ageing. No medicine or supplement has been shown to do that in people, and a good programme is honest about the difference between what is proven and what is still being studied.

Signs and causes

Fitness is one of the strongest predictors of how long people live. In a study of more than 120,000 adults, the risk linked with low treadmill fitness was as large as, or larger than, the risk linked with smoking, diabetes or heart disease, and the benefit of fitness had no upper limit.JAMA Network Open Mandsager, 2018

Lipoprotein(a) is an inherited form of cholesterol that raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is not changed by diet, and it is worth measuring once in adult life because a high level changes how hard other risks should be treated.European Heart Journal EAS consensus, 2022

Send us what you are seeing and we will tell you what it is likely to be.

How it is diagnosed

Muscle and fitness are measured directly. A VO2 max test shows how well heart, lungs and muscles use oxygen, and a DEXA scan measures muscle, fat and bone so changes can be tracked over the year.JAMA Network Open Mandsager, 2018

Advanced bloods add apolipoprotein B, lipoprotein(a) and homocysteine to the standard panel. Lowering LDL cholesterol by 1 mmol/L cuts major heart and stroke events by around a fifth, which is why these results are acted on rather than filed. The Lancet Baigent, 2010

A full body MRI looks for disease that causes no symptoms. It also finds things that turn out to be harmless, so each finding is explained by a physician and further tests are only arranged where they are needed. The BMJ Morris, 2009

What can be done about it

  • Changes you make yourself

At least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, muscle strengthening on two days, good sleep and not smoking. These carry the strongest evidence of anything in the field.British Journal of Sports Medicine Bull, 2020

  • Treating risk factors early

Medicine for blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar started on your own risk, not only when a single number crosses a line.European Heart Journal ESC guideline, 2021

  • A programme with a physician

Imaging, fitness testing and advanced bloods, with a doctor who sets the plan and reviews it through the year.European Heart Journal EAS consensus, 2022

What to expect

The measurable gains come from fitness, strength, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight, and they show up on repeat testing within months. Adults who move from inactive to meeting the activity guidelines lower their risk of early death substantially.British Journal of Sports Medicine Bull, 2020

Even so, no programme can promise a longer life. Many of the tests find risks rather than disease, and some findings lead to further tests that turn out normal.Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Krogsbøll, 2019

What you can do before you come

List the illnesses in your parents and siblings and the age they started, especially heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia and cancer. Early heart disease in a close relative is one reason to check lipoprotein(a).European Heart Journal EAS consensus, 2022

Write down what you want from the next 10 or 20 years, such as staying strong enough to ski or carry grandchildren. Plans built around a real goal are easier to keep to than plans built around a score.UK Chief Medical Officers CMO report, 2019

What not to buy

Be wary of anyone who promises to reverse your biological age or sells supplements as proven life extenders. No trial in people has shown that any supplement adds years of life.

Imaging is not needed every year by most people. Each scan carries its own chance of an incidental finding, so the interval should depend on what the first scan showed and on your own risks. The BMJ Morris, 2009

What we would do

Step 1

A consultation first

Forty five minutes with a longevity physician to go through your history, family risks and goals, and decide whether a programme suits you.

Step 2

Tests in London

Imaging, fitness testing and bloods arranged around your diary, with the results brought together in one place.

Step 3

A plan that is followed up

Your physician sets out what to change and in what order, then reviews progress through the year.

Ask before you book if you are not sure this is the right appointment.

Questions people ask

The first consultation is £350 and comes off a programme in full if you start one within 30 days. Longevity Foundation is £6,995, Elevation £14,995 and Echelon £34,995. An advanced longevity blood panel on its own is £1,395.

A full body MRI, a DEXA scan, a VO2 max test, metabolic and hormone bloods, a physician roadmap and 12 months of WHOOP tracking. It suits people who want a full baseline and a plan without the added cardiac CT and cognitive testing.

Parts of it are well proven, such as treating blood pressure and cholesterol and improving fitness and strength. Other parts are still being studied. A good physician tells you which is which and does not sell unproven treatments as certain.

Adults who feel well and want to stay that way, often from their late thirties onwards, and people with a strong family history of heart disease, diabetes or dementia. It is not a substitute for seeing a doctor about symptoms.

It can find some cancers before they cause symptoms, but it misses others and it is not a replacement for bowel, breast or cervical screening. It also finds harmless changes, which is why every result is explained by a physician.

Yes. The advanced longevity panel covers more than 100 markers, including ApoB, lipoprotein(a) and homocysteine, with a GP call to go through the results. Many people start there and decide on a programme later.
