The test measures total testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), the protein that carries testosterone in the blood. At The Wellness in Marylebone it costs £650, as the Advanced Health panel, with results in 48 to 72 hours and a doctor to explain the result.
The test measures total testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), the protein that carries testosterone in the blood. Together they let a doctor estimate how much testosterone is available to act.
A doctor may ask for it in men with low sex drive, erection problems, loss of morning erections, low mood or reduced muscle strength, and in women with signs of raised male hormones.
Symptoms alone are not enough to diagnose low testosterone, and a low result is repeated before any treatment is discussed.
Have the sample taken between 7am and 11am, when testosterone is at its highest. Avoid intense exercise the day before.
Testosterone is highest in the morning and falls through the day, so a late sample can read low in someone whose level is normal.
The Advanced panel, with SHBG, thyroid, iron studies and PSA for men.
Choose a panel and a time for the draw in clinic. A doctor reads the result before it reaches you, and rings or writes with what it means and what to do next. Or ring 020 3951 3429.
