You receive a written plan
If your child needs fissure sealants, hygiene or an orthodontic assessment, the dentist sets this out in a written plan with a fixed fee.
How often your child needs a check up depends on your child's own risk of tooth decay. NICE guideline CG19, 2004, from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, advises a gap of between 3 and 12 months between check ups for children under 18.
The dentist sets this gap at each check up, based on the health of your child's teeth and their risk of decay. Hygiene visits are usually booked at the same time as the check up. The dentist checks any sealants at each visit and tops them up if they have worn. The dentist applies fluoride varnish at every check up, and it is included in the fee.

No, fluoride varnish is included in the check up fee, from £295. The dentist applies it at the check up, and there is no separate fee for it.
A fissure sealant is a protective coating that the dentist paints onto the chewing surface of a back tooth. It helps keep decay out of the grooves in the tooth. A sealant costs from £125 per tooth and takes about 15 minutes. The dentist can top it up at a check up if it wears.
At an orthodontic assessment, a consultant orthodontist, a specialist in straightening teeth, checks whether your child needs braces or aligners and when to start. You receive a written recommendation, and the assessment costs from £250. If treatment is not needed yet, the orthodontist usually checks your child again in six months, as their teeth and jaw grow. If your child needs treatment, you receive a separate quote before anything starts.
