Kidney function test

Blood tests at The Wellness, Marylebone

A kidney function test measures creatinine and urea, waste products the kidneys clear, and uses creatinine with your age and sex to estimate the filtration rate, the eGFR. At The Wellness in Marylebone it costs £350, as the Core Wellness panel, with results in 24 to 48 hours and a doctor to explain the result.

What it measures

A kidney function test measures creatinine and urea, waste products the kidneys clear, and uses creatinine with your age and sex to estimate the filtration rate, the eGFR.

Sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate are measured alongside, because the kidneys keep them in balance.

Who it is for

It is checked in people with high blood pressure or diabetes, in anyone taking medicines that affect the kidneys, and as part of a general health check.

Kidney function falls slowly and without symptoms for a long time, which is why it is measured rather than waited for.

How to prepare

Avoid a large meal of meat in the 12 hours before, because it can raise creatinine for a short time. You can drink water as normal.

Questions

That the kidneys may be filtering less than expected. One reading is repeated before anything is concluded, and a doctor looks at the trend, the urine and your medicines.

Creatinine depends on muscle mass, so it can mislead in very muscular or very slight people. Cystatin C does not, and it is in the Longevity+ panel.
